For its 4th edition, Jaou Tunis re-thinks migration

Jaou Tunis is a free participatory cultural event open to all audiences.This initiative is supported by various local and international partners, both public and private. Jaou Tunis 2017 shall explore migration in all its forms, voluntary or forced, economic or political, regular or illegal. This topic will be dealt with in the context of artistic and participatory action by inviting artists to make every effort to generate public awareness and encourage civil society to react within a humane and community-based approach, away from media stereotypes. As a cultural platform extending between La Goulette and La Marsa alongside the TGM line, Jaou Tunis 2017 will bring together artists, gallery owners, cultural actors, researchers, social activists, and other stakeholders involved in migration.
Three major and symbolic axes define the platform in motion of Jaou Tunis 2017:
• Crossing borders, meetings and debates that will bring together about thirty stakeholders to discuss the issue of migration from a socio-political and economic perspective through a cultural and historical approach.
• A Migrating Nation, evolving around fifteen stands granted to forty artists supervised by the curator Lina Lazaar. Each stand will offer one or more works exploring migration. Disseminated between Le Kram and La Goulette, the stands will be moderated by artists from all artistic expressions: musicians, actors, photographers, dancers, etc. There will be original artistic creations to discover in unusual places.
• The Tour of Galleries, organized on the occasion of Jaou Tunis to discover exhibitions proposed by art galleries between La Goulette and La Marsa.
An event, the first of its kind for 2017: Jaou Tunis will be symbolically connected to the Venice Biennale, which has been celebrating international visual arts since the 19th century. For the first time in the history of the Biennale, Tunisia will be represented by a national stand at the initiative of the Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs and under the supervision of the curator Lina Lazaar. On the theme of migration, the Tunisian stand will be present in the form of a show entitled
«The Absence of Paths».
Jaou Tunis 2015 in figures :
− 10,000 visitors for the exhibition «The Whole World is a Mosque».
− 53 artists of different nationalities.
− 40 speakers from 10 countries (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, United Arab Emirates,
Lebanon, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy).
− More than 100 press articles in national and international newspapers.
