Being "stuck" at home could be a luxury. In March of every year, I go into my home village. I returned on March 5 to my village, where "there is nothing". In our house there are no books. Internet, drinking water and electricity are cut off. Often, my old computer insists on being plugged in all the time when there are electricity. When there's no electricity, there's no computer, too. In my old stuff I found the tool I need, an old Mini Dv, five cassettes, the FireWire cable and a battery charger. After many tries, I found myself in a rhythm where everything fits together, the rhythm of the village life, the supply of electricity and the daily movements of people in the village. The people of the village are my family, here everyone is related to everyone else. They don't are not numerous, they see each other every day and their topics of discussion become of more and more rare. There's a silence that arises, that goes with the rhythm. In DV, colour of sand and wind, in 4:3, distress format and in voice-over, speeches isolation, work will be away from news, current events and what's going on. Man was always a sick man.
In very short fixed shots, separated by black, silence, but also shouting the rhythm will imitate both the heartbeats and slow footsteps of the villagers. These same villagers, of this family will be audible off. Their gestures, their facial features, their looks will be filmed like the branches of a tree. trees, daisies, goats, ants and the wind. People in my village, in my family, don't talk much, they are not people who ask too many questions, speaking for them has never been necessary. weeks, my cousins spend the time tending the family's flocks. My brother, Sadeg, a Salafist ex-convict in La Mornaguia prison, my first cousin, Rachid, director of a Meublatex agency in Tataouine, Majed, head of an insurance agency in Tataouine. Djerba, Farouk, a salesman in a fishing shop in Djerba too, and Ali, a nurse who has couldn't get to his job in Qatar because of airport closures, accompany every day the herds. It's their new occupation. Their confinement in the countryside. The certainty that their words will fit the "organic" rhythm of the village excites me. Their fear of death, their disrespect for what I do, too. In the end, I have nothing else to do. What they have in common is their rhythm. Their sounds and their voices are the same, their looks too. I'm in it, so is the Mini DV.

I have been working for more than three years on my first feature-length documentary, a Franco-Tunisian co-production (chawki Knis and Thomas Schmitt) which is currently in production.
