Bio of the artist

Saâdane AFIF (Vendôme - France, 1970).

Lives and works in Berlin (Germany).

Graduated from l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bourges, Saâdane Afif is one of the most noticed French artists of his generation. The artist likes paradoxes. With an incredible imagination, he assembles, interprets, associates the most diverse objects, in order to question our time. He creates installations made of unexpected encounters between objects. His creations, with an uncertain status, oscillate between function and symbol, between art and design, and provoke displacements of meaning that engage a reflection on the current industrial society.

In 2009, Afif received the Prix Marcel Duchamp, which enabled his solo show at the Centre Pompidou in Paris (2010). He has been awarded also the Prix Meurice pour l'Art Contemporain (2015) and Award Günther-Peill-Stiftung (2012).

His work has been most widely exhibited at international group and solo exhibitions: Lafayette Anticipations, Paris (Performance, 2019), Jumex, Mexico City (2019), Wiels Contemporary Art Center, Brussels (2018), Kunsthalle Wien (2018), Wien, Museum Tinguely (2018), Basel, Simultanhalle Cologne (2017), Cologne, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2017), La Panacée (2017), Montpellier, Atelier Hermés (2016), Paris, Leopold-Hoesch-Museum & Papiermuseum, Düren (2016), Seoul, MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst (2016), Frankfurt, 56th Venice Biennale (2015), Venice, Museum für Naturkunde Berlin (2015), Berlin, an important solo exhibition "Blue Time, Blue Time, Blue Time…" at the Institut d´Art Contemporain, Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes (2013), Museum für Moderne Kunst, "Anthologie de l’Humour Noir" at the MMK Zollamt, Frankfurt (2012), "Made in Germany Zwei" at Sprengel Museum, Kestnergesellschaft and at Kunstverein d’Hanovre (2012), Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin (2011), OPA Oficina para Proyectos de Arte, Guadalajara (2010), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2010), "Technical Specifications" at Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam (2008), Documenta 12, Kassel (2007), Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco (2006), "Lyrics" at Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2005) and the Biennal of Lyon (2005).
