The Rooftop Studio
Béchir Boussandel in conversation with Mohamed Ali Berhouma 09/02/2025 11:00 AM Béchir Boussandel's creative process begins with immersing his canvases in water and color on the rooftop of his childhood home, a space that symbolizes both fluidity and movement. Following a meticulous protocol, he allows the water, in its unpredictable motion, to sketch the early outlines of his canvas laid flat on the ground. This initial gesture, both poetic and spontaneous, forms a chromatic foundation upon which, back in his Bhar Lazreg studio, he layers oil paints, creating ethereal landscapes where sky and earth seamlessly merge. Building on this unique artistic practice, Mohamed Ali Berhouma will guide an exploration of the "chromatic flows" that define Béchir’s work. By decoding his artistic approach and aesthetic choices, this conversation will illuminate the poetic horizons and creative dynamics that arise from his gestures. It will also delve into the profound connections between thought in motion and the transformation of material, questioning the interplay between intuition and control, hazard and intention.
