Opening day : Thursday, January 23 at B7L9 at 6:00 PM
From Dunkerk, where he was born, to Bizerte, the birthplace of his parents, Boussandel weaves a vibrant narrative connecting his travels, his family's migratory history, and his artistic practice. His works, infused with memories of Bizerte and his family home, gain richness from his urban explorations. Now based in Bhar Lazreg, the artist delves into themes of displacement and urban survival through captivating installations.
Tenté par d'autres soleils invites visitors on a sensory journey through the city via creations that merge painting, blown glass, metal, and organic materials. These works, evoking migratory flows and the constant transformation of our environment, challenge us to reconsider our relationship with urban spaces and nature. Anchored in resilience, they offer a poetic meditation on the human condition, where every movement becomes an invitation to transformation.
Tenté par d'autres soleils marks a significant milestone in the career of Bechir Boussandel. This solo exhibition, held for the first time in Tunisia at the B7L9 Art Center of the Kamel Lazaar Foundation, will open on 24 January 2025 before traveling to the Tabari Art Space in Dubai next spring.
Biography of the artist
Born in 1984. Bechir Boussandel lives and works between Paris (France) and Tunis (Tunisia). As a graduate of the Art College of Dunkerque (France), Béchir Boussandel began his artistic career in installation art before turning to painting.
Exploring the multiple layers of a moving painting, it is first of all a questioning of the perspective which finds its expression on the canvases. Disrupting the conventional relationship to the horizon, the artist deploys a bird’s eye view on surfaces whose materiality has both an earthly and astral aspect.
From these magmatic depths emerge isolated elements which, without ever meeting, establish a frontal dialogue through the works. Freed from any space-time anchorage, these singular miniatures intrigue and signify both personal reminiscences and symbolic transpositions.
In a constant tension between figuration and abstraction, Béchir Boussandel’s work engages a continuous questioning of the displacement of beings on and through unstable territories.
