A project of theatrical play in sign language
Vision :
The project we aspire to work on amidst these exceptional times is a theatrical play dedicated to both deaf and hearing children, applying both sign and articulated languages in simultaneous fashion. This oscillation between the two types of languages is a way of presenting and introducing sign language to hearing people, the latter would, at first glance, perceive it as overly complicated and hard to follow and understand. Yet, we will work in this project on simplifying this language through body movement in space as well as facial expressions.
Background story :
In this project, we will be referring to Frédérique Hébrard’s Babouillet. This play revolves around the story of an African lion, who was unhappy with his life in the African savannah and yearned for fame and popularity in the world of circus in Europe and America. He ultimately achieved his aspiration, after a journey fraught with hardships, obstacles, breakthroughs, and mixed feelings of joy, sadness and contempt. He ended up back in the African savannah where he founded his own circus along with the rest of the animals, which took part in his performance and dreams, using as pillars the trees, and as lighting source the moon and stars.
Project Duration :
Project implementation ranges between 3 to 4 months.
Play Duration :
Based on the probable background story, we guess the play would last from 15 to 20 minutes.
Performances and distribution :
If the quarantine persists beyond the end of the project, the play will be filmed and broadcast on available virtual platforms. However, if the quarantine is lifted, we will be delivering the performance directly in front of an audience, and we will work on distributing it to specialized care centres for the hearing-impaired and deaf people.
